Project:

Superconducting alkali metal fullerides show a trend toward higher transition temperatures upon increasing the size of the unit cell. Synthesis of new fullerides containing larger and redox-active cations like [Ru(bpy)3]n+ and [Cr(bpy)3]n+ might produce new solid-state materials with interesting properties of electronic conductivity and magnetism. The HOMO and LUMO of both the metal complex cation and anion are of similar energies and their energy separation is small, therefore multiple solid-state electron transfer pathways are possible. Furthermore, the 2,2'-bipyridine ligand can be replaced by other bipyridines like 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine or 4,4'5,5' -tetramethyl-2,2'-bipyridine etc which makes more fullerides possibly to be synthesized. The single-crystal structures of those transition metal complex fullerides are also investigated.
