Program in Materials Chemistry Research:
Synthesis, Characterization, and Device Fabrication

An REU
project in the Chen group will investigate the catalyzed copolymerization of
carbon dioxide and suitable organic monomers for the synthesis of biodegradable
polymers such as polyesters and poly(ester-amide)s. This work is aimed at
addressing current key challenges associated with utilization and fixation of
greenhouse-gas CO2 for the production of useful polymeric materials.
The methods to be employed in this study will consist of three major scientific
techniques: synthesis (catalysts and polymers), catalysis (homogenous and
pressure systems), and characterization (polymers and organometallics). The
very nature of this work will provide excellent educational opportunities for
the training and teaching of students with a wide range of techniques required
in MSN research.
